This programme focuses on deploying the European Train Control System (ETCS) Level 2 across Belgium’s railway network as part of Infrabel’s ETCS Masterplan. The aim is to enhance safety, interoperability, and efficiency through a nationwide signalling upgrade, replacing traditional trackside signals with continuous in-cab communication.

Project description

This program focuses on the deployment of ETCS Level 2 within Belgium’s railway network. The system is a cornerstone of the European railway interoperability strategy, using continuous digital communication to deliver signalling information directly to train drivers. This improves safety and enables more efficient operations compared to traditional trackside signalling.

The Masterplan combines different ETCS levels depending on line characteristics, with a progressive rollout strategy, pilot projects to validate the approach, and strong cooperation with technology suppliers. The project is also supported by the European Union, reflecting its strategic importance for cross-border railway harmonisation.

Project management excellence

As ETCS L2 Program Manager, I coordinate a large-scale and technically complex program within Infrabel. My role focuses on:

• Leading the integration of advanced signalling systems across multiple lines.
• Ensuring alignment between internal teams, suppliers, and regulators.
• Driving standardisation to simplify rollout and accelerate deployment.
• Overcoming technical and organisational challenges within strict timelines.

This work requires continuous collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and rigorous project management to secure compliance and operational readiness.

Project outcomes and impact

The ETCS rollout is progressively transforming Belgium’s railway network into a safer, more efficient, and fully interoperable infrastructure in line with European standards.

Through this assignment, I have strengthened my expertise in delivering complex infrastructure programs, managing system integration, and coordinating multiple stakeholders in time-critical environments.
